The Western Redbud is a small deciduous low-branching or multi-trunked, flowering shrub or tree native to California. Stunning rosy-pink flowers bloom profusely on bare branches in early spring before the new leaves emerge from dormancy. Reddish-brown seed pods, 4 inch long, mature in the summer and persist into winter. Green heart-shaped leaves turn yellow in autumn. Western Redbud naturally grows on dry slopes in the foothills and mountains of California, usually near seasonal streams and flowers best in colder locations where temperatures drop 28F or less. Plant in sun or part-shade. Drought tolerant and low-maintenance, this slow-growing shrub attracts birds, bees, and butterflies. Prune to maintain shape or size.
Tolerates various soil types but must be well-draining. Water regularly after planting until roots are established then reduce frequency and water as needed. Benefits from some shade in hotter climates.
